It's so interesting that they treat two identical students from different cohorts so differently. Some of those bright honors students might have parents that never realized to apply for them....
But we've seen it too, my honors kid has been told that even though they are learning the same stuff as the aap kids some teachers 'expect more' of the aap kids because they were accepted to the program as second graders....

It depends on the teacher. Also, many many parents sign their kids up for honors because they don't want them in regular. Which means the range of students is bigger than in AAP. So, while the assignments may be the same (and that's not true across the board), the class and discussions may feel significantly different.

As a PP mentioned, the AAP cohort at Frost is huge, much bigger than expected. My DS came from a large feeder center and only knew 3-4 kids in each of his classes on day one. He has made a lot of new friends in AAP.

Interesting. Frost is a Center right? My older DD went to a different AAP Center for MS and there were significant differences. Some teachers taught both and you could see assignments written on the board or a teacher would say, "I'm skipping this with my honors kids." Younger DD went to our neighborhood school with local AAP for MS and even there, we saw a few differences, though not as many.

We did AAP at Frost and there were so many students from LLIV that weren’t at CWES that I thought it was only honors until I looked in ParentVUE. AAP is a massive cohort there. I was shocked.

I’m the poster for the above quote. Wanted to add that both kids ended up attending TJ.

When they had the info session for my kid a few years ago they said AAP is slightly more in-depth than the same honors classes. This was Frost staff speaking.

But according to PPs above, that was just talk, so take it for what it's worth.

And as far as cohort, your kid will get an infusion of the kids from either Mantua (if at CWES) or Canterbury Woods (if at Mantua) to mix up the classes.

if you don't like the kids you have been with in elementary AAP- opt to do honors since you won't be with those kids.

I had twins, one in AAP and one in Honors at Frost. They are exactly the same classes, often taught by the same teachers in different periods. They would have the same assignments on the same days and cover the exact same material.

I massively disagree with the FCPS policy of separating those classes into different periods, but if you have to pick one, I would pick AAP. It's a smaller cohort (but still very large overall), which as they move to middle school gives you a repeating group of kids that you see in more of your classes, which is helpful socially.

We just got the email to either elect or defer AAP next year at Frost. I'm leaning towards opting out of AAP this time and having my DD enroll in honors classes instead. She is not taking Algebra I next year in 7th regardless. My reasoning is that if it's all the same, why shouldn't she experience a larger cohort of peers with more diversity and variety? What are the pros and cons of opting out at Frost? Another thread asks this in general, but I'm looking for Frost info in particular.
