Ours uses it in 2 ways:

- comparing Larlo's results from last year with his results from this year to validate that he is learning (and identify weak spots, if any)

- validate that Larlo's grade/year/class overall is where they ought to be compared with national norms.

Yes, it is used for placement in math and english classes. Our school goes through 8th grade so also submitted to high schools as part of student’s record. I personally like seeing the data because it gives a glimpse of how child is performing in relation to peers.
