J.Jill, Chicos and Coldwater Creek are my moms' favorite stores. She's 74.

I'm suprised the OP who is slim found the clothes to better fit her. I actually bought jeans there when I was a few weeks post-partum because I needed a cut that was a little more forgiving. But, no, I wouldn't shop there normally, but I suppose I could find something to buy in almost every store. I just wouldn't intend to buy things there.

totally agree - J. Jill is made for women trying to hide a little paunch, and many of them saw me through til I was about 7 mos pregnant (and big enough that not having the uneven cut of true maternity clothes meant I felt a draft).

I love their clothes but then again I'm a plus size 47 year old, so there you go.

I'm definitely going to check out their pants after reading your post. (I pass that store at Montgomery Mall every time I'm there and have never wandered in).

Maybe don't shop their for your "look" but if they have staples, like a great pair of basic pants, that fit you well and compement your figure than you should stick with them. Get your more stylish pieces elsewhere, but I say when it comes to basics/staples, "if it aint broke..."

This is my feeling about Chicos, too. Most pieces are a disaster on me -- frumpy because the cut is all wrong. But sometimes I find a cute thing or two. So it' always worth a browse.

Meanwhile, I tend to have good luck at Ann Taylor Loft, although I was not a fan last time I stopped by (a few weeks ago). May have been in between seasons?

I always think their clothes look boring, with bland colors. But that's just one person's observation.

OP again. Thanks, everyone! For the PP looking at the pants--I certainly have tried on some duds there, but their slim/skinny/authentic fit pants worked, earning me repeated compliments from DH. Even if I should leave the rest of their stuff for the older crowd, you're right that fit is key.

Yes, I would say it's a step above Chico's, but still has a considerable frump factor. I'm early 40s BTW. I find the cut of the clothes at both these stores unflattering.

My mom shops there, she's 72. She's also a fan of Chicos. My feeling about these two stores is that they are for older women who think they are chic, but really aren't - like my mom...

OP here. Thanks! (And just realized this should be in the Beauty, Fashion and Fitness forum. Sorry about that!) I definitely found the tops to be looser and less flattering on me. I'll keep looking around in general for clothes, as I don't want to fall into dressing in too matronly a fashion before my time...

My mom shops there too. She is in her early 60s with a stylish, free-spirit kind of vibe. She likes things looser and more muted than what I wear, and less tailored. She has gotten me a few things there which I occasionally wear, but their cuts don't do much for me.

My mom shops there. She always looks nice, but she's 63, so I'm not sure that's the right direction for you. I'm 33 and mainly shop at Banana and Nordstrom out of laziness so I'm also interested in which stores others suggest.

Just curious to know what the J. Jill clientele tends to be like. I used to live near an outlet and found pants that fit great, and for cheap. (I'm pretty slim and often have trouble with gapping waists when the hips fit.) Now, with just the regular store available, I'm wondering whether shopping there is a good idea. I'm mid-30s and have never been fashionable, so that's not necessarily my goal, but want to know more about the store and the impression its clothes have on people. Alternately, I'd take suggestions for stores to try.
