If you're in Manhattan/NYC area, then a college essay tutor & registration for pre-school. (It's never too early !)

Do they have all these items at home or is truly a surprise and have nothing. If this is just to tied them over till they can travel. The list is much smaller.

You can get a $50 Pack N Play or possibly one with a bassinet attachment (probably slightly more) for the crib/bassinet option, since I am assuming you don’t want to spend a ton on something you’ll only need for a few days.

The car seat might depend on baby’s size. Again, just assuming they have this stuff at home and you might not want to spend the most. Check baby’s weight (and assume baby might lose a little bit). It might be cheaper to get a regular rear facing car seat as opposed to the convenient infant seat.

Crib, diapers, and someone to help the new mom with cooking & cleaning.( And to watch for any sign of post-partum depression.)

They'll go to the baby's grandmother, where toddler sibling is waiting. They have a pack and play there.

Obviously they'll need

Carseat
diapers
wipes
a few outfits

What else is essential in the first few weeks?

I'm thinking that a curbside pick up order at Walmart makes sense. Grandma is hesitant to go into a store on Black Friday, because of concerns about bringing home germs. Is there a better idea?

OP - is this a “I didn’t know I was pregnant” story?!

I’d say extra onesies if laundry is hard right now - particularly away from home.

Honestly all a baby needs is wipes, diapers, a car seat, and a place to sleep safely. The ideas for mom above are good, but food delivery would be amazing.

All the best.

Usually Walmart is open for a couple hours on Thanksgiving. You should go today if you can. Might be true for Target too but I’m not sure. You should get the car seat (make sure it works for infants) at least.

They’ll need a bassinet/crib. Possibly formula/bottles/bottle brush/bottle cleaning detergent if mom is not breastfeeding.

For next week, will need baby bath tub and baby soap.

Laundry: some people use infant specific detergents like Dreft newborn.

Your list is good. Hospital might have suggestions on where to get a car seat or someone is going to have to go to a store. Pickup might be an option. If that worried about germs, wear a mask, don’t dawdle, and wash hands after returning home.

The most important thing is to care for the mom, make sure she has a lot of water and rests. Keep the house quiet and clean. Do whatever you can to help her. The baby doesn’t need much of anything.

Burp cloths

Other things I can think of are all specific to however they have decided to feed the baby.

White noise in the first few days? Babies aren’t usually that sensitive yet.

Mom is more likely to need nursing supplies like lanolin cream, breast pads, maybe a good nursing pillow.

Large pads.

Amazon doesn't have any infant carseats with delivery Friday. They won't let the baby leave without a carseat.
