This is not true. My DD has a lunch bag from Target as do many of her friends.

High school will be later so those teens who were starving because it’s not cool to carry a lunch bag will have a tougher time to hold out till they get home. Surviving on bars gets old quickly.

A hydro flask lunch box is absolutely fine. When everyone has lulu lemon it’s not as unique or privileged anymore.

Drop the rope on your curated lunch box meals with creative salads, lentils, thermoses of stew. They don't want kids seeing they are babied.
Let them take what they want stuffed in a bag in their backpacks. If they ask for help, fine.

DC is in a small private (8th grade) currently where everyone had to bring lunch as there is no cafetaria. Got a hydro flask lunch box and DC said OK for this year but no way in High School, ‘too embarrassing’.

Is this true?

Yeah that's always been a thing for boys especially, but even many girls. Been that way since the 1950s at least.

Why would you even care? Let your kid shove a sandwich down in their backpack. They can decide what to do — they will be in 9th grade. Just nod and smile and let them figure it out.

My sophomore son and senior daughter at our large FCPS high school bring lunch boxes and have never registered a complaint otherwise about using them.

Some seniors get into taking "senior backpacks" which are preschoolers' bags.

What is he proposing?

My kids are in public school, and the immense majority bring lunchbags because the cafeteria is way too small (and the food is gross), and eating out is nice, but ends up being expensive. The lunchbags are usually stuffed in their schoolbags, and brought out at lunch. I've never heard my kids or their friends be somehow ashamed of their lunches from home.

But maybe private school is different.

Your kid will see for himself when he gets to HS. He will adjust then. My daughter did this too before starting middle school. Claimed you don’t do certain things. Then she got to middle school and finally shut up about them bc she was wrong.

Lots of kids bring lunch bags or brown paper bags for lunch in high school.

My kid has a lunch bag he puts in his backpack. I see the girls carrying lululemon type bags.

HS teacher and parent of teens who go to a different school. Teens bring lunch boxes.

But I know that mine often tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about and I just reply “okay.”

Let your kid put things in his backpack if he wants. Have him pack it himself. This is a phase and not worth the battle.

One of mine sometimes doesn’t bring the lunchbox and stuffs protein bars and snacks in her backpack pocket instead because she doesn’t want to carry it all day and because her lunch is super early this year anyway. She eats when she gets home.
