We do white and gold garland across the top of the mantel. It's simple and doesn't feel cluttered.

Fake green garland plus stockings with cute holders. That’s it. Our mantle is too narrow to hold anything else without risking it all falling.

I cut fresh magnolia and pine from our trees and arrange them across the mantle with an angel in the middle. That’s it.

I was going to say a natural looking faux garland ( it will be neater than fresh) and then intersperse some pine cones, and real or faux lemons or oranges for color

Cut some magnolia leaves, scatter them on the top. Pick up some large pine cones. Spray them with gold glitter or "snow". Scatter them on the top. Put a couple of ornaments you already own on the top.

Cost almost "0" except for the spray gold or spray snow.

stocking, fake pine garland, pine cone wreath, vase with fake holly and thick wide candles in glass holders.

Everyone will have a different opinion on this. We do a little village like a PP mentioned, but I think what looks the best is what you like and what’s meaningful for your family

It’s ok to put ornaments on the mantle. I’d do some holiday greens with red holly berries, and then intersperse either ornaments or a little village or other holiday knick-knacks. Or a bunch of low, wide glass candle holders with wide white candles.

Go to Michael’s. Buy something that catches your eye.

Voice of dissent: Don't do a garland, just do a little village, tall candles on the side and some green and green flocked bottle brush trees of various sizes. Keep it simple, you are probably overdoing it.

How deep is the mantel? That makes a big difference. Natural garland if you need it for a party or for two weeks. If you want it up for a month, do faux.

IMO the led flicker candles look really convincing in cut glass or any glass with a lot of texture.

These are maybe not as textured as ideal but they are cheap and come in a set. Put them randomly on the mantel, like maybe three in a group and then the other three each alone going away from there.

Or copy Cassiopeia and put the extra one with a friend. Put a led tea light in each one.

Then wind the garland around the candles.

Pottery barn has a ton of weighted stocking holders. Pick some you like. Divide your mantel into thirds, and center the row of stockings in the third on one side or the other. If you have too many stockings, just start moving the group towards the center once you hit the side edge.

IMO that’s plenty. But if it doesn’t feel like enough, you can add pinecones, berries, etc. If you want natural materials and you’re loaded, go to American plant food! They will have a ton of berries and stuff you can pick up with your garland.

If you want further inspiration, UK homes and gardens always has fun Christmas decoration photographs that aren’t boring.

If you decide you’re into that “more is more, heavily ‘decorator’” aesthetic but you just don’t know how to do it, you can buy whole tablescape kits from Mrs Alice. You could easily repurpose one for a mantel!

I’d do one color - for ribbon and ornaments and keep it simple.

Can't go wrong with garland lights and candles. Throw a few pine cones in the mix. Spray paint some pine cones with fake snow and glitter or something with a young relative.

Do you do stockings? Nativity?

We have stocking holders, fake evergreen garland, a couple battery candles, nativity figures, and a couple nutcrackers. (Careful with nutcracker, the cheap ones look cheap.) Focus on varying height while staying in the same color family.

I've searched on the internet for ideas but they are all so complex. I need simple ideas (like 6-10 items I can buy at Home Goods, Target, Amazon, Michaels, whatever) that I can arrange on my mantle to look good enough.

Does anyone have a "recipe" they use and could share. I have tried year after year to do it on my own and I always end up returning everything because it looks bad. I have a typical brick hearth/fireplace with a wooden mantle, 90's colonial style.
