I’ve heard that the University of Alabama is really interested in getting kids from Alabama

Yale learned the hard way how being desperate for students from North Dakota can go very badly.

It’s funny, I knew a Yalie from ND in the ‘90s

Universities still have racial quotas / “diversity goals,” despite the 2023 S.Ct decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, 600 U.S. 181.

Admissions responses to the S.Ct. precedent since 2023 appear to have been: “prove it.” Meaning, they have ignored the precedent and continued with DEIA quotas.

The DOJ is aware of this “resistance” movement, which is why they have pursued and obtained the settlement with UVA and continue to pursue the separate compact with other universities.

The trump administration is seeking to end racism and enforce The Civil Rights Act.

The Civil Rights Act protections have long been violated by DEI-admissions standards.

What UVA signed with DOJ was a settlement agreement.

It’s a small factor that could tip the scales for certain applicants depending on their state of residence and how many others are applying from their geographic area. Some colleges, like NC publics, strongly favor in-state residents, but many colleges want some amount of geographic diversity in their incoming classes. As mentioned above, check the individual college’s CDS and it will provide another data point.

LOL. Completely forgot about that. (Didn't know about it until after the Drexel visit.)

It doesn't have to be a rural area. For example, Rice is not highly popular in NYC schools. If a kid at NYC private schools wants to ED Rice, there is a higher chance for acceptance, providing that the stats is there. Simply because the competition is not as crazy.

It can give a small bump - probably the equivalent of being a legacy who doesn't donate much. Depends on how remote you are and whether there are others from your location.

I know a kid who was a legacy at a very good (but not TT) school in the northeast from a very random place in the western half of the country and we were joking that with those two combined she basically needed a pulse to get in.

Some do. It says on their common data set whether they consider location in making admission decisions, and if it's very important, important or just considered.

Of course, geographic diversity is a big positive at most colleges.

California kids are everywhere. NE, mid-Atlantic, South, they all love to have some full pay CA kids.

New England brings from south or a state like Colorado. Geographic diversity if student has at least minimum stats.

Ie. Southern schools to recruit from the midwest, ie Texas, Georgia, Fla. in recruiting from Iowa, Minnesota, Dakotas.

I was told most Midwestern stay midwest for college so if a kid were to apply to a Southern school, their acceptance would be given an “extra” look and acceptance by admissions.

Do schools have quotas from different geographic areas? DS looking to go to Baylor from Minnesota, engineering. He is not a too, top student.
