You could do a self-guided walking tour of the university. They probably have a self-guided tours on their website.

Many schools on the quarter system will be starting class that Monday, Jan 5. So kids will be heading back to campus that weekend.

Check the calendars, but off the top of my head Northwestern, U Chicago, Dartmouth, Carleton and all the UC schools might work.

Google to see which schools have J-terms. They're more likely to have things going on that early in January.

We have a free weekend that weekend. Prefer if it's a place we can fly to from a Southern city, and uber around (and not rent a car).

There will always be someone around. If you're okay with seeing a student or two hanging around and workers in a student center, business office or somewhere

You have to look at admissions pages of colleges you are interested in. I suspect no one is around but you won’t know til you look
