There's plenty of tech activity at CMU, in Pittsburgh, and it is a very short flight from other major tech hubs.

Pittsburgh is within a day's drive of NYC and Boston and has a nice, large airport. When schools are strong, the employers pay for you to fly to them.

Review career center materials. The most quant CMU grads are very highly-paid. It is a grinder school, though.

My daughter’s boyfriend is a junior CS major and he did an internship in DC this past summer that he interviews for on campus. He loves it and really likes Pittsburgh.

I live local and it's a great school with lots to do nearby.

CMU is right next to the Pitt campus in a great part of Pittsburgh. Not at all isolated.

Pittsburgh is the 27th largest city (by MSA) in the US, slightly larger than Las Vegas. Would you be asking the same about Las Vegas?

Anyway, my friend's DS went there. Your DC may prefer summer internships near home, so if you live in the DC area, plenty to choose from. Many DC-area firms recruit there since it's driving distance away.

You are confusing CMU with Purdue.

Tech jobs in general are taking a bit of a hit right now, but Pittsburgh has plenty of tech employers, most of which are located within a mile or two of CMU’s campus. If you are picturing lots of blue collar workers going to work carrying their lunch pails beneath a smog-choked sky, you’re about 50 years too late.

I’ve heard many great things about CMU’s computer science and engineering programs. However, my child has some concerns about the location and future job prospects. Specifically, she’s worried that the combination of intense academic demands and CMU’s more isolated setting might make it harder to find internships or jobs — both because of the distance from major tech hubs and the limited time available for job searching due to the heavy workload.

Can anyone share some insight?
