+2. What does relevance even mean? To me, I define relevance as "would I miss this if it was gone". There's no Hollywood celebrity that meets that bar for me. They are all replaceable.

I just heard Oscar buzz about her new movie, so I do indeed think she is “still relevant.” She’s a household name and a steadily working actor who already has an Oscar and several other awards. So I am not sure what you mean?

She is actually well-poised to move into older rolls now - mom, boss, etc. - and I think it will be interesting to see what she does with them. She seems like she has her head on straight, keeps her private life private, and likes her job. Good luck to her.

Well, she has a movie in preproduction with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. So I would definitely say she is still relevant - it’s very difficult to get in a movie with those two and the only other actress I can think of who’s even in the ballpark is Margot Robbie. Barbie grossed over $1 billion which is truly a unicorn these days.

She looks good and she is confident and "likable" I have never seen a performance by her that has actually knocked it out the park.

Sidney Sweeney is a more talented performer, all the noise about politics, boobs etc aside. I've seen films she is in where her performances have been much better than those of JL

Why would she be irrelevant? The movie business as a whole is struggling because if you don’t have movies as part of your social media algorithm (and many people don’t) you won’t hear about them, and so you won’t go to the theater to watch them. That, and it’s just easier to watch things at home these days.

I agree she got by primarily on charisma and instinct early in her career. I actually liked Silver Linings Playbook, I know it annoyed a lot of people but I enjoyed that movie and liked her dynamic with Bradley Cooper. But yeah, she's not like a method actor. She has a seat-of-her-pants quality. But I think when a director knows how to handle it, it works well.

She was good in No Hard Feelings, I think the reason it wasn't a bigger hit is that the movie itself felt a little stale.

I don't think she's over at all though. She hasn't done as much stuff recently because she was having kids. She made NHF between her first and second baby. She just came out with a somewhat artsy drama (Die, My Love) costarring Robert Pattinson. The reviews of the movie have been mixed, but her performance has been praised. She plays a woman going through postpartum depression. It's directed by Lynn Ramsey who is a really well respected indie director (We Need to Talk About Kevin, You Were Never Really Here).

JLaw and Pattinson have done a lot of press for it on the film festival circuit and have actually been really charming together. I would not be surprised if she eeked out a couple nominations for her role (not Oscars, but like Golden Globes or some of the other lesser prizes). She won't win anything, but I think people like her work in the movie and like that she's taking on interesting work. I think she's still viewed as a highly bankable star but is entering a time in her career that is tricky for women because there are not enough roles for this age range. So it will be interesting to see what she chooses.

She's 35 now. Some people can only act at a certain age. Maybe she was good from 16-25 or so, but now we have to see if she can get roles appropriate for a mid 30's woman, and rock them.

I have mixed feelings about her skills as an actor. I think she's very charismatic IRL and on screen. I liked her in No Hard Feelings, Don't Look Up and Winter's Bone, and I thought she was decent in the Hunger Games. I'm very whatever about Silver Linings Playbook.

But early on in her career, the media acted like she was the most talented actress of her generation, when I think she can often works in one mode. She has this stoic energy that works well in serious movies like Winter's Bone. Funnily enough, that same stoic energy works in comedies like No Hard Feelings, because it transmutes into this deadpan quality. But I sometimes wonder if her admirers confuse that stoic energy for depth.

It also seems like none of her latest movies have gained relevancy (even though I think No Hard Feelings should've been bigger than it was). Are people tired of her? Does she just need the right hit?
