Is this a smart move to try to keep up with the big football schools since VA doesn’t have a big time football school right now? If they get good again maybe it would attract the kids leaving for SEC and Big 10. On the other hand, should that money have been put towards AAU membership? VT is clearly betting that football will be key to their future.
Sorry, but why would kids in the SEC and Big 10 leave their schools to go to VT just for football? And didn't the PSU coach get fired because he wasn't good? Sounds like a risky move to me.

Another geed who doesn't understand that athletic department budgets are separate from schools' general academic budgets.
VT BOV voted in August for a massive increase in athletic funding driven by student athletic fees. Next time use Google, idiot.
$100 per year per student. Chump change that will deliver a massive ROI if Franklin delivers anywhere near the results he had at Penn State. Next time don't be such a geed.

If VT got really good again maybe more kinds that are admitted would enroll in the future. Football can be a yield tool.
VT already draws a lot of kids, no? Do they have a low enrollment problem or are they trying to compete with Big 10 and SEC schools? Because if they are, that's not going to work. People like VT because it's VT. I don't see them as competing against the Ohio States of the world.
