Forgot one - maybe Malibu or Santa Monica or somewhere with an ocean view that I could easily walk to the beach.

I'm not sure I would. Community is important. Real estate is expensive.

But f I had the kind of job where I could do the digital nomad thing, vs only being allowed to work from a fixed address, I'd definitely take the opportunity to explore. I'd just slowly go west from the Great Lakes onward.

If money is no object, the parts of California (wine country, maybe San Diego) or Hawaii.
If money matters, then the suburbs or exurbs of Northern Virginia. It's actually really nice here if you don't have to commute.

I know too many people who retired to LCOL rural places and hated it - so nothing more rural than, say, Middleburg. And no snow.

Meh. Your kids probably wouldn’t want that.

I wish my parents would move close to me, and I fully plan to move near my kid unless she tells me not to.

Depends how much disposable income I had. I could see living in NYC and going to Broadway plays and comedy shows after the work day ends, and could see living in Montana and spending all my time with a dog and occasionally going into town for groceries and social interaction.
