Physics is in A&S at UVA, which has a foreign language requirement. Plus there are pages and pages of debates about UVA wanting 4 years of FL in general ...

I don't know what this means. UVA does not admit based on major. They like to see 4 years of language in high school from all applicants, but there are plently of stories of people getting in with less than four years. You won't get a pass because you say you want to study physics, and you will have to take langauge in college to meet the graduation requirements (unless you are Echols or can place out).

Does a Physics major need language more than 2-3 years?

Odd question. Getting in to what?

Hard to transfer into SEAS later in any case. Easy to transfer into CLAS later. Harder to be accepted from HS to SEAS than to CLAS because the E school is very small and applications are numerous.

Lots of females are applying to SEAS targeting the BSCS these days, so no edge in general. Female with obvious specific interest in MechE or under-represented SEAS major might have an edge. "Obvious interest" here is not meaning an essay response, but instead clear pattern with ECs from HS years, HS courses taken, and such.

What matters the most to admissions at UVA? Your TRANSCRIPT, specifically your core classes over the four years of high school. Dean J said that GPAs are meaningless because of the huge variation among school systems. COURSES matter. Are they rigorous in terms of what’s available at your school? Do they match what you say you want to major in? Engineering students should have strong math and science; architecture students need art and design; nursing students must have a strong science background.

At UVA, you apply to a school or college, not a major. Dean J said that they ask about a major so that a professor from that department can reach out to you. Engineering and architecture students declare majors at the end of their first year. College of Arts & Science students declare at the end of their second year. "

Correct, but you don't have a better chance with one major over another. It just needs to make sense.

Agree. The whole thing needs to make sense. But that's true everywhere.

Does she have the stats for e-school?

This is silly. You’re transcript should reflect highest rigor across all subjects, but it certainly doesn’t need to scream data science as a high school senior.

Yes. absolutely.

This is just wrong. You cannot apply directly into the Data Science school or McIntire, so you are just applying to Arts and Sciences, and then applying for Data Science or Comm School after your first year. Dean J has said over and over again that they do not take major into account for applicants into A&S.

One of many examples:

https://uvaapplication.blogspot.com/2025/03/2024-2025-uva-admission-statistics.html

"Remember that we do not admit to major in the College of Arts & Sciences, so we weren't evaluating your application for the Econ major."

You can only apply to the College of A&S at this point, so indicating data science as an area of interest is fine, but you have to get into A&S first.

Not really, but it should probably make sense from a cohesive story perspective in view of ECs, personal statement.
