Ex-teacher here. A student of mine was arrested for selling drugs. The administration did not send a letter out. The only families who needed to know were the families of my student and the buyer(s).

I like how PP said APS handles it with an email saying police were on campus for a private student matter, and that students were safe. This would be my preferred way for admin to handle it.

When my kid was at Westfield two years ago, a student was murdered off campus and the killer was still at large, the police didn't know who they were looking for. Westfield sent out a generic email that night about a student who had passed away--it sounded like they died of illness--. The next morning, at drop off, there were police everywhere all over the school building and they were pulling kids out of class and interviewing them. Not a peep to the parents that a *murderer with a gun was at large*.

No one wants the arrest report or the kid's name. But it damn well impacts my kids if the police show up on campus and arrest a student in front of others. Giving parents a heads up is the right thing to do so they can explain and support the feelings, probably of fear, that come with that.

If the police come and arrest someone at school I don’t see why the school would send something about it. It’s no one else’s business.

Don’t enable FCPS hiding things from parents.

When this happens in APS, we get a simple email that says "ACPD was on campus today for a private student matter. Everyone is safe'.

What most people in power never understand, and this group of administrators are particularly dumb, is that in the absence of information, people will gossip and untrue things are spread that are more damaging than the truth.

That's the whole business model of this site.

They have a lot of internal policies about school-wide or system-wide communications. We got one when there was an incident of antisemitism at school. There are system wide notices when a student dies or there is a drug overdose or a weapon at school. Every time a sex-offender teacher gets arrested, there is a system wide email. Some of those communications are state-mandated.

So it short, there are lots of reasons. Most of which are policies the school system itself set.

If you read police reports, there are some that say a juvenile is arrested or that a "third Juvenile" is involved--meaning not yet arrested, I think.

There was a burglary in Reston a week or so ago and a 20 year old from Annandale was named--then released. Maybe, this kid has a connection to that--or innumerable other possibilties.

It's not going to be instant. The messages home about "incidents" at school are very carefully worded. If they send something it will be later - not right after something happens.
