The policing of language around "tea" in the US is so stupid.

"High tea" and "afternoon tea" are two very different things. No one is "policing" -- and it isn't "stupid" to point out the difference when OP is asking for recommendations regarding what to wear and time of day is relevant.

I suggested the sleeveless red dress - I retract it now knowing this is for high tea. As pp said, you do not wear a cocktail dress to high tea.

Here are my suggestions for a festive dress to wear to a high tea - in general I’d wear something subdued in a winter color, and then “festive it up” with a faux fur trimmed cape, or fun bag, or velvet shoes, or sparkly necklace or earrings, etc.
