As someone who takes the 15-83-81-78 route instead of 95 all the time, you will avoid all the crazy drivers, unpredictable traffic and not to mention save $.

Yes we have school age children and a long drive to Boston. This is just the first leg.

We can’t afford to fly, and our family can’t fly or drive so this is the way unfortunately.

OK, so Westchester is just a stopping point on the way then? I think it makes sense to take the PA route through Allentown rather than 95.

I would personally take the longer more predictable route.

Is there any chance that leaving on 95 from DC on Tuesday will really be not that bad, or should we take the long way 'round?
if you are eventually trying to get to Boston and end up doing the PA route, consider going up to 84 in Scranton and going east from there. Avoid NY and Westchester completely.

Personal preference. We are 95 ride or die from Arlington to CT. My parents hate 95 and prefer the PA route.

I would rather take 95 and leave at the tail end of rush hour instead. More options for alternate routes if needed.

It will almost surely be longer than 4.5 hours, but Thanksgiving outbound traffic is more spread out nowadays, so it's not quite as predictable as pre-covid.

I'd wait until 6 PM if possible and fire up Waze and go where it tells you.

It will probably take you 2 hours just to get to Baltimore.

I would not leave DC at 4pm on Tuesday.
