Ivies are very long shot. Look at the thread of who really gets into Ivies at each level of SAT's. A 1490 puts you at a severe disadvantage.

What is the Math and Reading scores? LAC's love high Reading and can tolerate low math. Conversely, engineering/STEM schools favor the opposite.

The majority of NESCAC schools may be realistic for this student, particularly with the use of ED.

Vandy and WashU are close to being embarrassed at this point, with only half of their enrolled classes submitting.

Everywhere else in the T20 either requires scores or has a very high % submitting, such that one would only apply TO if hooked, and would certainly submit 1490. Not submitting 1490 would be a mistake, in my opinion.

You can't get in if you don't apply. Chances are small either way. Possible, but not likely, no matter what the score is.

Give it a shot if the grades and rigor are there.

Unless your DC has a very compelling story to tell, I would not waste an ED on a T20 university. My DS is a senior applying to schools with a 1500 and typical grades (top 5%) and leadership ECs at the school level. Applying to top 25-35 range universities and 15-30 range LACs. Applying ED a school where his SAT is at the median.

Get the SAT up 50 points and it’s a different conversation.

Kids are compared first and foremost to classmates. If this kid is coming from a high-achieving high school where classmates will be applying with the same grades and a 1560 then it may not go over well. I say "may" because you never know. But generally around the DMV you need to "whole package" for a top20 admit because so many kids have it.

Use your school’s Naviance/Scoir to get the most accurate read.

Depends on the major, too, where you live, what HS you go to....

Not enough info. What does “top grades” mean? What is the rigor of the course load? How does the student compare to their peers?

I mean, it’s worth trying, but depending on many factors, the actual answer ranges anywhere from “strong shot” to “not a chance.”

Top grades, a few very strong extracurriculars. Is a top 20 possible?
