I know some pretty active theater kids at Oberlin and Muhlemberg and one at Kenyon (not sure if she's still active in Theater but was in high school) and Amherst

Pretty much. There are student groups at some of these, but classes will be limited or unavailable as will mainstage shows.

This was good advice becasue the intel ran the gamut from "we are constantly stugglinging to get people to join" to "we have a very interested group but can never get funding or space from the school to perform so we create our own spaces" to "we have full support from the school and alumni and our four or five separate student run performing arts groups put on a combined 16 shows per year -- all non majors."

whoa can you name the last school you mentioned with a ton of shows for non majors?

Agree—great question to ask on tours. My kid did the same.

I’d look at schools that have a more straightforward Theater BA as those schools tend to also allow non-majors to audition for tech and acting roles.

Honestly I wouldn’t assume that. I think most schools with a decent theater school are going to have theater majors act in student productions.

Agree. Your child may not be in mainstage productions, but there will likely still be plenty of opportunities for involvement.

The Yale School of Drama is a graduate program, not an undergraduate one. You can major in anything and act in Yale's productions. That said, a lot of those who want to go into acting professionally cut a lot of classes to produce and rehearse their roles. Some of them have rather low gpas as a result.

There are also lots of different opportunities to act at Yale. The Dramat is extremely competitive. https://collegearts.yale.edu/organizations/yale-drama-coalition/performance-groups/yale-dramatic-association But groups like Yale's Children's Theater also offer chances to perform and it's easy to get involved.

Yes.

Illinois has a student group that puts on musicals.

Michigan has a Residential College that does summer Shakespeare and an amateur group that's not part of the Theater school.

If a non-theater major wants to get involved in theater productions, should they avoid schools that have competitive theater programs like Yale or Carnegie Mellon?
