PP has too many scandals in the name of sports for me to ever have considered it for my children when we lived in NY. Trinity and HM are more respectable schools both academically and in values.

Polly Prep is definitely a bad choice. Horace Mann is great from what I hear.

Personally, I wouldn't love the grading style of HM. I don't think it would be good for my kids either.

But, I know they cater better for certain interests.

Also, worth considering if your kid can rise to handle the academics. Sometimes, being a big fish in a smaller pond is better.

Where do you live? We ruled out applying to PP because the commute from the UWS seemed too much. DS is a senior at HM and has really enjoyed his time there as both an athlete and a student.

Totally depends on what you’re looking for. Trinity and HM are on the same level in terms of academics, though HM eeks ahead in terms of prestige and rigor. HM has never been for the faint of heart that regard. Obviously location is a thing. HM is all the way up in Riverdale and though the 1 train will be easy to get your son there it’s still a pain. Trinity is righty on the UWS.

Poly is a good school, but you’re right. It’s more for the athletics. Not anywhere near the same academic level as the other 2, but still a great school. Do you live in Brooklyn? Because that’s another long commute out if not.

I know this is a DC forum, but I was wondering about your opinion of NYC schools. My son is very athletic and wants Poly Prep because it has a huge sports reputation and a very athletic student body. However, Poly Prep is very much a tier-2 or tier-3 school academically. He has likely admission to Trinity and Horace Mann due to high-level and longstanding connections our family has with those schools. Trinity and Horace Mann are more prestigious, but they are much more academic with a lower emphasis on sports.
