My daughter specifically asked us *not* to come. She said none of her friends' parents were going and she'd be embarrassed. So we didn't go.

I don't think my high school even had it (public school in California in the early 90s.)

My kid's school had a ceremony more like your memory, OP.

But I'm not really surprised that other schools do it more casually. Most kids in NHS are busy with sports, music, etc. I know a lot of inductees were not able to make the ceremony because they had another obligation at the same time.
If having it right after school made it so most/all inductees were able to go, that's great!

NHS is NBD. OP: you need to reconsider your view on it.

This is us too. But it is also not viewed as a huge deal by the kids.

Its so common and nothing special and the blah ceremony reflects that.

It was never a big deal at my HS. The guidance counselor told me I was in and that was it. We also had a school honor society that took the top 10% of each class (small school so usually 6-7). The top 2 students were inducted junior year and the rest senior year. That ceremony was a big deal. Full school assembly, parents invited, noted at graduation, etc.

Ours is an evening event, and parents were asked to attend via livestream because the HS auditorium space would not even accommodate one guest per inductee. My child definitely does not think it's special - I think the current inductee group is around 275 kids.

My child has an extracurricular practice the same night that they're leaving to go to the ceremony and then returning to after the ceremony, so goodness knows what they (and their teammates being inducted) are planning to wear.

It’s dependent by HS. I had the opposite experience. In my HS in the 90s this was nothing special and automatic based on GPA. I don’t remember any kind of ceremony at all but attended a huge school. You stayed in if you kept your grades up and submitted volunteer hours.

I am in shock at the big to do made here of NHS and that some schools even have evening events at all.

I’ll let you know - ours is this week in the evening and they told the kids “business casual.”

How does your school run these? I was pretty disappointed in our HS ceremony. When I was in HS this was a big deal, the induction ceremony was in the evening, we dressed up, our whole family was there, it was very meaningful. I still remember it 30+ years later.

My DC was inducted two weeks ago. It was right after school, while parents were invited, only a small handful were able to be there. Kids were coming from class and some leaving right after for sports, other than my child (because I brought them a change of clothes) were dressed up. It just didn’t feel special. It felt rushed and jammed in and like an afterthought. I was really disappointed. Before I say something to the principal, I would love to know what other HSs do. Maybe this is just how it’s done now and I need to step back. Maybe our HS flubbed this and everyone still makes a big deal of this and we need to up our game. I’d love to know the range.
