I had a guy who parked in my driveway in a van and I saw it was auto detailing and just assumed it was ordered by my daughter who lives in an over-the garage apartment but who should still be at work. They had the address wrong.

But the guy was so nice and professional but clearly freaked out at coming to the wrong address. He got all tensed up when I asked where he was from and I just had to say NO NO NO it’s okay I am with you I speak some Spanish and a little Portuguese and you are welcome at my home and I would like your business.

It’s only cards and a cell phone but I scheduled an appointment for tomorrow. I don’t even necessarily need it but I’m definitely not sending my car for detailing to the place owned by the guy who lives on Martha’s Vineyard anymore.

Awesome! Glad you helped out an illegal immigrant instead of a horrible American citizen with a similar business.

So you assumed he was an illegal immigrant and not a US citizen.

THIS is the problem. YOU are the problem.

If he is illegal once you paid him you have committed a Felony.

I don’t think that is true. You are not responsible for verifying the legal status of the contractor you hire.

Nor is any other private company. All they are required to do is keep an I-9 on file.

Legal Consequences: The legal consequences for paying an illegal person can vary, including fines, jail time, and a permanent criminal record.

It must be "knowlingly".
That's the gray area where rich and politically connected people can get out of the fines or arrests with a sharky lawyer.

I am not OP, but I don't take legal advice from the illiterate.
