For example, pasta was on sale a few weeks ago. We bought enough for 4 months because it typically goes on this sale every quarter. In Sept baking supplies went on sale. They won't be at that good price again until after Christmas so I bought what we would need for the holidays.
As far as purging: we donate clothes/toys/books every other month. Everything has a place to put it in our house so we try hard to only keep what we use and enjoy.
