Every time I drive by an accident scene or I see a tow truck transporting a vehicle with collision damage its almost always a very modern vehicle. It's as if driver error is responsible probably 94-96% of the time, and not the condition of their vehicle.

Parents also risk their kid's lives in cars, you just don't see it.

There are people who let their young kids ride around without seat belts and go get on the freeway. You just don't know it is happening.

Some people are stupid about safety with their kids.

That said, I know plenty of people who put their kids on their bike, then ride carefully through side streets in their residential neighborhood to drop their kids off at school. Those kids are not in danger -- they are on streets with clearly marked bike lanes where traffic rarely if ever exceeds 15 miles an hour. I don't worry about kids on bikes in that setting and I think it's way more common than parents zipping through rush hour traffic on major roads with kids on bikes.

Most of the parents transporting kids on bikes in my neighborhood seem very cautious, avoid main thoroughfares, are defensive when navigating traffic, etc.

Sometimes I see people being dumb, but then, I see cars doing dumb things all the time and plenty of them have kids in them. Plus you don't even see all the people skipping car seats and seatbelts for kids, sticking little kids in the front seat, etc. So this is not a cyclist thing, it's just a people thing.

My pet peeve these days is people sticking kids on the motorized scooters and weaving through traffic. Not helmets, ever.

Well then they have zero situational awareness if they don't immediately see it's not Amsterdam.

I always wonder what goes through a parents mind when they decide to ride with their small child on the back of their bike in the middle of rush hour traffic. In an ideal world, the drivers would yield to the bikers so they stay safe, but the reality is that your kid is in mortal danger. Why would you selfishly imperil child?
