The application form is full of questions about how you'd change the world and what you will do as a student to change the lives of others etc. It is very heavy on the volunteer service side and the campaigning for social change.

And academically it is mediocre.

agree, and, I too, am an alum and didn't send my children there. It's only 44.8% selective and woke as hell.

egads fewer than 25 freshman out of 509 had sat above 1500!

I have no idea what that is supposed to mean but Oxy was once a great SLAC on level with Pomona and Stanford. If you are from California and had those three options and picked Oxy, today you are bitter about it.

uh huh. That means zero. And he was so fed up that he left for Columbia. He talks about his dissatisfaction with it in his book "Dreams from my Father".

What about Pepperdine?

I went to Occidental. Like many other similar private SLACs, Oxy is a great place for high quality UG teaching and getting hands-on paid research in the STEMs, psychology, economics and others, starting as early as summer after freshman. Faculty are teaching UG only, with a few master programs. For those interested in the engineering path, there is a 3-2 BA/BS program with Caltech, 20 min away. Or take ala carte science/engineering exchange classes at Caltech with no / little additional tuition. The campus is nicely manicured but rather small and sleepy, located in the Eagle Rock suburb of Los Angeles, close to Glendale. Immediate surrounding area is not too exciting, but having a car in LA is a must and southern california has a bustling social scene including many beaches within an hour drive. Occidental will fit well if your DC is a serious student who likes to blow off steam in the weekends. But it may not be the right place if your DC is looking for a career in MC/IB/Tech straight out of college, or expecting a big party scene. The school is a reliable feeder school for medical, law and business schools, especially in the area (USC, UCLA, etc.) Oxy's is Div III and used to have a decent football team, but that was discontinued in 2020 during pandemic. Oxy is big in social mobility and a very large percentage of incoming freshman are FGLI and URM from the LA area. During my time a sizable number of students come from the east coast boarding school scene, especially lacrosse players.

It’s a lovely small school in a fun neighborhood. The kid I know who goes there really likes it.
