Subject: What areas of your house do you show?
If people want to see our whole house, I don't mind showing them. I don't usually offer, it feels weirdly pretentious to show off our house.

For parties, I put a two standing coat racks in the hall, just past the bathroom. Keeps people from wandering back to the bedrooms.

House tours are tacky and intrusive or tacky and pretentious.

I would only expect a full tour for very immediate family. Friends just see the areas we are entertaining in. Someone asked me if a friend (in the neighborhood) had 3 or 4 bedrooms. I realized I had no idea. Even though we have been friends for years I had never been upstairs in her home (no complaints!)

We never do house tours.

If family or friends wanted to tour our home because they had never been there before, that would be fine with me. But no one in our families or friends are going to criticize us about the state of our home. That said, if someone was coming that I thought might want a tour, we would generally pick things up and make up the beds. But I would be fine, for example, leaving stuff scattered on the bathroom counter — maybe just put away tampons or something like that (if they were out).

Why don’t you just tidy up your bedrooms and show them. You know in advance they are coming. This is not a surprise. I know that my family would think it is weird if I didn’t let them see the bedrooms

Because they’re loved ones and we’re showing them our home.

I love touring houses, I look at the areas you let me.
We just recently moved to a new to us house, and people like to see it all. I have no problem with it. However, if you don’t want to show your bedroom, don’t. You do you.

For people we're close and comfortable with, everything. Because they will be respectful and just put a toe into bedrooms and then step out. For people we are not close with, just common areas - kitchen, dining room, the guest bathroom, and living room/den (wherever we'll sit and hang out).

Extended family (eg DHs aunts) are visiting our city for a family event. We’ve been in our home for a few years. Is it expected to show everything (bedrooms) or just normal living spaces)?
