OP here.

The thing is... I'm transforming a skirt that's meant to be worn at the low waist, and making it hit my natural waist. The embroidery is one of a kind (and is not going to get messed up when I take it in with a curve at the back). But it is going to make the skirt borderline bum-showing.

It's a very short mini. Return it.

It's a mini skirt. Adding anything to it will make it look like a mini skirt that you added fabric to because you thought it was too short.

Either wear it with opaque tights or go buy a different skirt. Next time don't buy a mini skirt since you don't like that length.

I also have sewing skills. Just because you can add fabric doesn't mean you should. A very short mini skirt with both embroidery and a different fabric trim is going to look junky and teenagery, not sleek and classy.

Return it and get something else. FWIW, a quick Poshmark search brings up literally hundreds of cute velvet mini skirts, many in the $20-$30 range.

I think the problem is most fabrics are not going to look that great with velvet. I think satin pleats can look cute as an extension on a skirt, but not with velvet.

Ha! The marabou/fur would definitely look over the top and fun. I think for those it would be sown directly on the velvet.

Given that you have the sewing skills, I'd say do a little taffeta bubble. Very on point for holiday party wearing.

I routinely repair old clothes and make alterations and seriously... return it or give to charity. It's not like velvet skirts are so rare or so expensive that you can't find something appropriate.

OP here. I was thinking of sewing the extending fabric onto the edge of the lining under the skirt. Please believe that I have sewing skills! Extensions are often done with lace, and they look great, but this time I can't do something that's see-through, so I wanted another sort of fabric...

I would just wear it as is, at places you're unlikely to sit (cocktail parties, happy hours, etc.).

Or wear black wool tights so your undies are completely covered.

I think it will look dumb to add fabric on because it will be too hard to get it attached in a way that looks intentionally-designed.

You could maybe add a strip of marabou feathers? Because that is such a fluid trim.

Or maybe a fur? Fake or not fake?

I bought a black velvet mini skirt for Holiday parties. It has some white embroidery. Problem is, the skirt is too short and I want to add 2 inches of material to the hem, to have some peace of mind that no one's seeing my bum. It can't be lace or something that's see-through.

Can you please give me some ideas as to what type and color of extra fabric to sew on? I was thinking of black satin pleats, to look sleek. Or would some flouncier fabric work better?
