Agree with pp who suggested a sweater. I would go lightweight Marino wool — something from Banana Republic, maybe. Cashmere blends are having a moment too … look in department stores and like Quince or Nordstrom Rack/Saks Off Fifth. Agree these can be dressed up with a collared shirt or tee for a more casual look. A blazer (get it tailored) can complete the outfit.

Also, don’t laugh but check Costco. More often than not they have good basics from brand names.

Finally, invest in a couple of pairs of shoes. Leather sneakers have been popular, although I personally dislike the look. Can’t go wrong with a decent pair of black chukka boots. Be sure the belt matches the shoes.

There’s no way you have a teen right now.

He borrows his Dad’s Paul Smith striped dress shirts bc we don’t want to spend like that while he is still growing.

And a cashmere 1/4 zip to look smart.

If his feet are done growing, you could splurge on a pair of RM Williams boots. It’s a quiet status symbol (that he will wear forever) among my older son’s friends.

DP- Lulu has hard to find short lengths too! They make some really great pants that can be dressed up or down and can be worn on the golf course as well.

Quarter zips are in – big time. Of course they can be over a nice shirt or a button up shirt. As for pants, you can look at Hollister, Macy’s, Abercrombie.

Khaki pants or similar, like the Lululemon performance pants
Fine merino quarter zip (or crewneck if coat needed)
Decent belt
Shoes to match belt
If needed, sportcoat that goes over top of sweater

Uniqlo has some nice linen blend button downs if you’d be open to that. Or A sweater? Gap actually has great men’s sweaters. Or like a Polo quarter zip sweater from someplace like Macy’s? Or a v neck sweater (slightly baggy) over a tee? My son got some stuff like this because his girlfriend said he needdd nice clothes for date nights. Here are some ideas:

Honestly, Uniqlo is a great resource for young-skewing yet polished clothing for both men and women. And it’s decent quality for the price, too. Everything washes well, pleats stay crisp, fabrics don’t pill.

My college-age daughter loves their stuff, and has found that it holds up even in the crappy campus laundry machines. It’s not trendy, but not frumpy, either. L

What about a V neck cashmere sweater from Macy’s? Your son can wear a button down shirt underneath or a nice T shirt for a more casual look. All with dress pants.

We have several events in December that need dressier clothes. I have two teen boys and right now jeans are the dressiest things they own.

I’m looking around for inspiration but many of the stores have yet more hoodies. We already have the hoodie angle solidly covered.

Where do you go for young men dressy clothes? I want something more interesting than a button up.
