You could say that my sis in law divorced her husband after he lost his job but, boy, you'd be leaving a lot out. He was fired after he had a DUI, sat around all day playing video games and did no housework and then screamed at her when she got home.

My DH has had a few periods of unemployment. It can be really stressful (the loss of income has been less than the depression, lack of sex drive, anger, etc)

Sometimes he handles it well, sometimes not.

How did it improve her finances to divorce him unless she was able to find a quick replacement?


Sounds like she had an affair.

Mine filed for divorce when he got a major promotion (mid-6 figures to 7 figures). Since then I’ve been startled by how many people have had similar experiences and been on the receiving end of a filing either because of their spouse’s promotion or their own job loss.

It is very common to avoid divorce for lifestyle/ financial reasons, at least on DCUM. When the incentives disappear, I expect lots of people would chose to divorce.

The first time I separated from my XH, I didn’t end up filing because he became unemployed and the lawyer I was consulting told me to prepare to support him for 18 months. Ironically, when I did file years later, I got 5 months of CS.

As someone whose husband has had periods of prolonged employment, I think it’s much much complicated than money. People from the outside thinks about money when it could be about untreated depression, failure to contribute in any way to the household, among other things, that wear a couple’s connection.

Is it common for people to file for divorce because their spouse lost their job? I am not talking about an unemployed spouse actively trying to find a job. I am talking about an unhappy spouse who is unhappy with the lifestyle change due to loss of income.
