Funny you would say that because I asked my gwu gyn for a GI rec and she said the good ones she knew had all left. It irked me she would not tell me their names because they no longer worked for GW.

I’ve been noticing the impact mostly in Gastroenterology.

I’ve had only positive experiences there. Delivered two kids at GW and still see a fantastic OBGYN there for perimenopause issues. I don’t do family medicine there and I do remember there was an issue with their ultrasound tech during my last mammogram (as in one was not available during my appointment), but that could happen anywhere. I haven’t noticed anything negative really.

MFA Internal Medicine eroded my patience. A PCP informed she was unavailable for my appointment. I had waited for my annual checkup for 5 months and wasted two hrs in morning commute!

DH had some docs there who left and went to Sibley. Of course, we have a Sibley doc who went to Inova.

I had a horrific experience there. I was overbilled for the procedures they did do, billed for procedures they didn't even do, and injured by the doctor who I'd hired to treat me.

Stay the hell away from GW MFA!!!

It's probably because they suck.

That place needs to close. There's a reason it's failing...

The article doesn’t mention this, but I wonder to what extent Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement rates are an issue. Reimbursement rates tend to be less than cost, and DC has about 300,000 residents on Medicaid. Additionally, private insurance reimbursement rates aren’t great either. For hospitals, imaging and elective surgeries (meaning scheduled, non-emergency surgical procedures), pharmacy, and rehabilitation tend to be the only profitable services.

This makes a TON of sense to me since every time I have ever tried to get care at MFA it has been a very weird experience to the point that it seems like the practices don’t even exist. Like, they try to give me an appointment with a GP in six months … for my current urgent issue? And it is basically impossible to schedule on line, and often impossible to reach a real person at all. I did have a better experience a few years ago with the dermatology practice.

+1. I gave up trying to schedule an appointment with anyone there because it was always at least a 6 month wait.

MFA eliminated their entire allergy practice a couple of years ago, no notice to patients.

This was how things were at my PCP's office in Mclean (one of the big groups, but not GW). If you have an "urgent issue," you were going to see a NP, if you could get in at all. I had to use urgent care for the most part, and when you went to schedule and annual physical there would be nothing available for 6 months. I finally just scrounged up the money to go to a concierge practice. It's expensive as heck though.
