It’s fine. I don’t like how the garage is lower than the main level.

I’m a Langley parent and there is really no difference among the schools, except for language opportunities, like a PP mentioned. Buy where you want to live.

Is Oakton high much different than Langley/Mclean. They’re all FCPS so I’m wondering if there’s a significant difference. I know Langley and Mclean are ranked higher but why? What’s the big difference.
Between the three, your commute is more important. Pick the shortest one.

The language offerings vary among schools. McLean HS has German, which Langley ceased to offer a few years ago.

I don't think there is going to be significant difference in schools academically, but there may be a demographic difference and vibe and wealth of parent body. I think that Mclean is likely closer to Oakton in terms of socio economic factors than to Langley as it has more multifamily zoned for it and isn't uniformly low density wealthy residential housing serving it. Depends what you prefer.

If Vienna gives you a house you like and can afford, and it's great for your job commutes and you like Vienna, I would go with Vienna. I don't know if the diff betweenn Langley facilities is going to make this much difference or elevate your kid somehow. Housing in Langley area would be of much lower quality for the same price.

Also just that you know, neither Langley nor Mclean really provide hand holding or nurturing environment for your kid. This is the opinion of my very close friends with kids in both schools. They only provide competition factor if going for AP or HN classes. AP classes are intense and more college level in terms of workload and expected performance to get a high grade. If your kid isn't naturally bright AND also driven and organized or you don't have resources for tutoring you likely will struggle to get the most out of it. E.g. this won't make a difference worthy of downgrading quality of housing.

Oakton is ranked higher than McLean in the latest US News ratings.

There's no significant difference. Oakton is more affordable than McLean, and McLean is more affordable than Langley.

Both Oakton and Langley have boundaries that stretch far to the west of the schools. McLean has more compact boundaries, but also some "attendance islands."

All the schools may be affected by upcoming boundary changes, but a house in Vienna zoned to Oakton is "safe" in terms of the HS boundaries.

Oakton and Langley were both renovated recently. McLean got a cheap renovation in the early 2000s and needs another one.

McLean and the eastern part of the Langley district are more convenient for people who want to commute to Tysons and/or DC. Oakton is more convenient for people who work in Reston or along the Route 28 corridor near Dulles.

But Langley is ahead (no 3 in the state) as usual, Oakton at 6, McLean at 8. https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/virginia/rankings. The issue for me would be the horrendous traffic on Maple through Vienna every day. I wouldn’t even over there to shop because of that madness. And, yes, the commute to downtown or over the American Legion Bridge is much better from McLean. Finally, your real estate investment will pay out more in dividends in McKean. Our $1m home tripled in value in just a few years.

Langley's thorough reconstruction was just finished about 4 years ago or so. The project was phased over multiple years like Falls Church. It is a beautiful facility, with features the older FCPS high schools don't have.

As parents of a current Langley HS student, this is 100% accurate. Langley HS has amazing facilities, and the facilities are much nicer than most private schools. The only school that has nicer facilities than Langley HS is the private Potomac school, which is a private school with a 55K/year price tag. Langley is on top of the food chain, follows by McLean, and Oakton HS after that. That being said, Oakton is head and shoulder above Falls Church and Justice.

This is how many Langley families routinely talk and act, OP. Be sure you want to hang out with people who say in all seriousness they are at the "top of the food chain" before you explore that alternative further. Many choose to steer away on purpose.
