They are asking me to pay a fee for the initial consult, no bill, just an email request to pay via their online portal.
I was not made aware of the fee. The doc I signed only mentions a cancellation fee for the testing if cancelled less than X days in advance.
Mine wasn’t even scheduled.
Am I obligated to pay the fee? Or rather what happens if I don’t?

Seems like it's on you for placing an order for a service you didn't have the legal right to purchase.

13:01 again. Also, some psychologists do not require both parents' consent. If you really think your child needs a neuropsych, go somewhere else. Your child's wellbeing is more important than their father's narrow-minded pettiness. Fathers are the one who most often try to block their kids' evaluation process, because they're usually not in the trenches of parenting and fail to observe a lot of things that mothers pick up on much sooner.

So, wait. Was the other parents at the initial consult? Or did you go have that without the other parent?

^ sorry, posted too soon. The balance is due on the morning of the first day of testing. This means that technically, you could get the interview with the psychologist for $200, and then walk. But I guess that's enough of a payment for an hour.

The business is out of luck if it did not make you sign any contract with payment details.

At Stixrud, they take a $200 deposit during the initial phone intake to reserve the rest of the procedures: the interview with the psychologist, the two days of testing, the debriefing with the psychologist, and the written report. Which all costs upwards of 5K.

What did you agree to? Check all docs you signed/initialed and all communications with the provider. Request copies of anything you signed if necessary. It’s likely they slipped it in there.

I had occasion to have initial consults with therapists for my kids. Sometimes the consult was free, sometimes it was not. Sometimes it was “free” if you bought the services.

If they didn’t disclose it, that would be the correct assumption. Agree with the PP that said double check fine print. If it goes to collections you request the document you signed agreeing to the fee.

I never expect any service provided to be free; what an odd viewpoint.

Really? You think professionals give away their services for free? I'd assume there would be a bill unless informed otherwise.

They may have a policy that there’s a fee for the initial consult, but it is waived if you schedule an exam with them. Check the fine print in any intake paperwork they gave you and reread all emails.

I mean, i don't think you are obligated to pay, but on the other hand, how much are we talking here? I would probably just pay it because they may send it to collections.

Was negotiating “psychoeducational” testing for a kid, agreed to pay a certain rate for testing, there was an initial consult where they asked for the other parent’s consent which he did not provide, so I told them I could not proceed with the testing.
