The humanities offer skills that AI will take from people. I think people need the humanities more than ever (and many smart employers agree).

Hands learn honest work,
Tools speak simple solutions,
Trade lights steady paths.

At many points in the past, parents have thought the same things. Everything works out. It just does. We think we live in important times. We might but probably not. We live in a time of change but probably not that great of a change when viewed over the long term. Stopt he anxiety and live life smartly.

To the PP below -- this is why you should be a humanities major. To understand the world in context. And to learn to not overreact.

Well, you can give up or be smart and look at at least trades at community college. or the two year guaranteed community college acceptance program. any in-state program is a good option. Many are trade oriented

+1. OP, you are the adult. You have to get a grip and figure this out for your kid. There are many avenues to success, but you need to start reading responsible educational reporting, such as The Wall Street Journal and The Chronicle of Higher Education, and meet regularly with your high school college counselor. Get on top of this now! Get vocational testing (free at public schools), get IQ testing, and take advantage of any freebies the school offers. Then, figure out what's best for your kids' own needs.

There's a huge opportunity for skilled trade work in this area, because everyone's trying to send their kid to the ivy league! All of these big houses have HVACs and plumbing that will need fixing.

It’s so hard to know. I think the best thing we can teach our children is resilience, grit and flexibility. Also good budgeting skills and self reliance. So many young people today don’t know how to cook, they don’t know how to make anythings. I have one young relative that knows how to make stuff and can actually live on very little cash income — I wish my kids had those skills.

Without a college degree = delivering for 7-Eleven, back-braking construction, poverty level salesperson at Lord & Taylor

With a college degree = at least they have a chance
