This probably works for a goalie but agree that it isn't ideal for other positions.

You should trust the coaches and let them make the call. Tryouts have not even started yet maybe slow the roll

I would always say go up to varsity. At the very least it sets you apart for your sophomore season. You just have to hope you have good coaches who will give you good practice time and get you in some games.

I have been on multiple coaching staffs that took a few freshman and then gave them almost no playing time and limited time in practice. It felt like they just sat around all season. The good news is they were able to float down to JV.

Don't ever turn down the chance to be on varsity as a freshman.

Nope. You can only play in either on game day.
You can practice with varsity and play JV.

CCan he do both? Play and get the reps as a freshman on JV and then maybe get some time on varsity? The more playtime, the better especially the year before recruiting. Extra reps, extra scenarios to improve his skills.

It’s better to be on varsity freshman year including because you’d be a returning varsity player start of sophomore year, which would open up some fall and winter opportunities for varsity players, take some stress out of the tryout process sophomore year, and set the stage for contributing during sophomore season, which would be better for recruiting purposes if that is the goal. I don’t think many players, given the option, would say no to varsity in favor of JV.

More playing time on JV. Does he want to play or does he want to stroke his ego to say he made varsity as a freshman?

In boys lacrosse do you think it’s better to be on JV as a freshman as a starter, or making the varsity team as a freshman but being 2nd or 3rd string at a highly ranked private school?
