There are several great gap year programs in Israel so I know a bunch of Jewish kids accepted to top colleges who did it. I don't know what the policies are in terms of deposits, etc. I do know of kids who did the programs and never came back.

It doesn’t count against yield. They are committed there. To not yield is to turn down the offer.

Neighbor took a gap year at UVA to spend a year in South Korea. It was some sort of an exchange program, that was an extension of something he did in HS. He must have applied to other schools over that yearand he went to UPenn Wharton when he returned.

Neighbor was not Asian BTW.

Not all, but many do, particularly private universities. You would request to defer a year. Some colleges may ask for a hefty deposit to defer. (You do not then apply to other colleges during your gap year.)

UCs do not, if I recall.

You can google the policy for a college. This may be located in the academic policies section of a college website.

Bad advice. Barring very specific circumstances, it’s best to apply during your senior year of HS, then ask to defer after you’ve been admitted.

So all colleges offer a gap year? Is a structured program or just a year to do something else (DS wants to live and work in another country).

All is likely a stretch, but it's not uncommon. The ones I've seen just want you to explain what you'll be doing; a structured program isn't required. You just can't matriculate somewhere else.

That's a terrible idea. Apply with the rest of your class senior year. Get accepted. Send in deposit. Follow instructions to defer for a year. It's not unusual.

Will any school let you take a gap year? We are applying to T20, and I’m unclear why they would let you defer a year when they are so focused on yield and building a class? With shrinking college age population I would assume that makes planning hard too?
