I'd also focus on Greenwich Village or Tribeca. Or the Wallace, which looks great and the UWS is also a great base. Just find an unfussy boutique hotel, a cozy intimate restaurant (you aren't likely to really go wrong -- just look on Google maps for the cuisine you like and find a place with good reviews). Spend your time walking around, explore the High Line, sit and have coffee. If you have the time head up to Central Park and walk with no agenda in mind. Ride a ferry up the east river and back for incredible views of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. DH and I live in Brooklyn and this is what I'd do for a staycation without the kids.

I’d look at the Roxy — it’s got a lively, fun vibe with a jazz club in the basement and a small art house movie theater and it’s in tribeca which sounds like it might be a good location for you.

Live Jazz at The Village Vanguard.

Stay at the Standard High Line, go to art galleries and the Whitney.

Do you like the theater?

Because Boston and Chicago are far. We live in PA now. Also, because we like NYC, I just don't know it very well. Lastly, we've done the main tourist things many times throughout our lives, so we're looking for a fun time together that doesn't involve Times Square, Statue of Liberty, etc.

I like theater, but sadly my husband doesn't.

We'll be going from PA, not DC, so one night is fine and that's all we can get coverage for our kids.

We love food and excellent restaurants. We love good cocktails. We love walking around pretty neighborhoods and stopping for a coffee or cocktail. Unfortunately for me, my husband is not at all into theater.

Do you like the theater?

I always stay at the Empire because it is across from Lincoln Center, but it is a generally good location and very affordable.

That’s really far for just one night, not even two.

What do you like to do or eat?

I'd like to plan a one night getaway in NYC for my husband and I, but I am so overwhelmed when looking at NYC. Does anyone on here know it well and can make any suggestions? Where would you stay (under $800/nt), where would you eat, what would you do/see? We're not big shoppers, nor are we really into the big standard touristy attractions.
