I would contact student services and ask them.

The Semester 1 drop down menu does not show all the grades, but shows QTR1 grade and QTR2 grades as both being weighted 50%. So, that's no how a rolling gradebook is supposed to work. I am confused because at Back to School Night I seem to recall teachers discussing how Carson used a rolling gradebook. I could be mistaken, but can't find anything about how final grades are calculated on any of the class syllabi or on the school website.

They keep trying to standardize grading criteria across a very large school district, yet not every school does this rolling Gradebook. Which schools use it?

Parent of a 7th grader here - can someone explain rolling grade book to me? Do the kids not get separate Quarter 1, Quarter 2, etc. report cards? Is the final score a culmination of all scores or is it an average of the four quarters?

They still get a report card for each quarter, but think of Quarter 1, Quarter 2, and Quarter 3 grades as being a snapshot of their progress.

The assignments and assessments just keep getting added throughout the year. The grade updates in real time as new scores are added, giving a constantly evolving picture of student performance.

How It Works
- Each assignment is weighted and added to the total grade pool.
- The overall grade reflects the average of all completed work, not just recent assignments.
- Students can recover from early low scores by improving over time, since later work contributes to the same overall grade.

Benefits
- Encourages growth: Students aren’t penalized permanently for early struggles.
- Reflects long-term learning: Shows how well students master content over time.
- Reduces grade inflation: Prevents artificially high grades from short-term performance spikes.
- Promotes accountability: Every assignment counts toward the final grade.

Challenges
- Can feel unforgiving if students fall behind early and don’t catch up.
- Requires consistent effort: There’s no “fresh start” each quarter.
- Needs clear communication: Students and families must understand how grades evolve.

This is how the rolling grade book it supposed to work. It's how it worked for my kid at Carson years ago and is that way currently at his high school. At Carson currently, the gradebook in SIS does not reflect this methodology. It shows quarter 2 grades as being brand new starting this week, and no longer shows any of the material from last quarter. TO me, this seems to indicate that it is not using a rolling gradebook as it has done in the past.

Yes. However, only the final grade will be on the transcript and it’s an average of all the grades throughout the year. Teachers have said grades usually up being the same or even better than if a traditional gradebook was used.

The nice thing is if your child is absent at the end of the quarter and misses test, they can just make up the tests when they return and the grade can instantly be updated as soon as the info is entered. There are no hard deadlines to get it in by a certain date as in a traditional gradebook which closes by a certain time.

I like the bars - I can quickly see formative vs summative percents and understand the total grade easier.

So they don't use a rolling gradebook anymore? Where does SIS show the current grades based on the rolling gradebook?

The updated SIS is now reflecting quarter 2 grades as being a clean slate, not including grades from quarter 1. When my older son was there, the grades literally just continued into the next quarter, so quarter 2 grades would include the entire gradebook up until that point. Is this just an error within SIS? If so, hopefully it will be addressed soon so we know what the current grades actually are.
