However, she has a couple friends who don’t have phones. I think their parents are the type who are waiting for high school. Anyway, I don’t think they realize how much their kids are being left out. Not just of the group chats and socializing that takes place online but in organizing get togethers outside of school. They have to involve their moms and get their moms to text other moms in order to arrange meet ups outside of school like we’re still arranging playdates. It’s awkward. My daughter went to a party over the weekend and one poor girl was left out because the party thrower didn’t want to text this girl’s mom about it. I felt bad hearing the story.

Anyway, I think 7th and 8th graders should have phones. They need it for socializing.

Parents who don't give their middle schoolers phones don't need or want your sympathy. If you only knew how much *they* look down on *you* !

At our school, it’s not just the fast crowd. It’s pretty much every group.

Mine has a phone, it’s just attached to the wall. They make their own plans. They have active and happy social lives.

Her friends without phones will have measurably better mental health outcomes.

They also just don't get the memes and stuff and it's awkward. They're sometimes referred to as "YouTube shorts kids" because they see the same tiktoks/reels like seven months later on the only platform they're allowed on.

….. by who? Parents?? Or loser middle school kids who think watching TikTok will make them have a better life.

I understand what you see because I've seen the same but, disagree about feeling sorry for them. My son socializes and plans his weekend outings with friends and they coordinate other things. He is also on the phone riding to school when he could be studying or talking. He ends up involved in whatever dramas happened and the 8th grade parties are a big step up from birthdays, I feel like drinking will be on the table by next year. My kid isnt even a phone addict but I wish he was less connected and nerdier. He would agree with you though op. I do think we can't mold our kids much as they will be who they are but holding off on a phone is better for them, I'm sure its even worse for girls in terms of mental health.

My daughter is on 8th grade and she’s constantly texting and FaceTiming friends. They’ve gotten to the point where they essentially plan their own social lives and don’t really involve their parents Briley they need a ride somewhere.
