Is there a particular stimulant that is more recommended for his issues?

We understand the importance of positive reinforcement. But is is really hard to practice as it is opposite to how DH and I were raised. DH and I are Asian American and our parents were immigrants. Our parents were loving, but would be considered strict.

What are you feeding him? If you change diet and eliminate screens and increase exercise you often don’t need a stimulant.

This is nonsense. ADHD isn’t caused by junk food or screens.

Nobody said it was Karen, simmer down. We did this with my ADHD’er and the changes were night and day. They still have ADHD but it’s much easier to manage with routines and other things that aren’t medication.

Yes, you are 100% right that I can't raise him as I was. It's just counterintuitive and a real struggle personally, but I am working on it.

Intuniv always makes kids sleep the first week or so. You have to stick it out. You can also give it at bedtime.

Also - behavior in school and grades are more important than sports

You’d be better off in public with an IEP or homeschooling.

Is he currently taking a stimulant? If not, I'd start there. I am always surprised why people are willing to try guanaficine, find it doesn't work for them and then don't try the stimulant, esp. when symptoms like the ones you describe continue to persist.

I say this kindly bc I think its important to recognize that most schools want to partner with families and see that they are working together. Sharing a diagnosis and then doing nothing to address it outside of that is not really partnering with the school. Try a stimulant and see if that helps with the behavior--you'd be surprised.

To answer your initial question, our medicated DS is also at a private religious with ADHD--we have an accommodation plan that allows for preferred seating, homework submission exceptions (he can hand in early rather than have to hold on to multiple pieces of longer projects), study guides in advance, and extra time on standardized tests. He also was allowed to doodle and have a fidget at younger elementary--these were phased out when it became distracting for classmates and it was clear our DS was using it as a distraction and as a "flex" on his classmates. I wonder if your child's frequent bathroom break requests and rubix cube usage are being seen in the same light.

He has been there since K and its been fascinating to see how the other families who have gotten diagnoses as the years have progressed have managed. Some of them expect the school to bend over backwards to accomodate their child without doing ANYTHING outside the home--this can be medication, this can be working with a psychologist, having an executive function coach, etc.

Taking a kid with a diagnosis like that and letting someone try to bash him into a mold that doesn't fit him will just be years more of misery that interfere with learning. Why don't you find a private that caters to that student population instead?

Neurodivergent challenges cannot be disciplined out of anybody.

It depends on the school and what they’re willing to do. I’ve worked with privates where there are very few accommodations—extra time and writing center support are the most common. I’ve also seen privates with individualized learning plans, push-in support, executive function skills coaching. This has to be a collaborative discussion between you and whatever educators are supporting your son at school. They’ll let you know what resources they have and what boundaries they have around behavior.

What helped for us was a sticker chart focused on specific behaviors that was rewarded at home.

Above poster again. ADHD kids do really well with posture reinforcement and goals. He should be on a reward system for things you/they are working on like talking in class.

Is there a resource teacher or counselor who deals with accommodation plans?
DD 13 has adhd and is at a private Christian too. DD is eligible for a 504 plan but because it’s private it’s just called an accommodation plan. The resource teacher gave input and I gave input.
He should be allowed breaks and fidget toys as long as it’s not disruptive. She also gets verbal reminders about turning work in and other academic accommodations.

Hi all. I have a son in 6th grade that attends a private religious school. He has been attending this school since preK. He was diagnosed with ADHD and ODD after 3rd grade.

He is having issues at school. Although his teachers say he is not disrespectful, he disturbs other kids by talking during class; he sometimes gets up out of his seat; asks to use the bathroom frequently; his rubik's cube distracted the other kids during class and was confiscated. To get him to do classwork is a struggle and his teachers state they can't constantly engage in back and forth conversations with him about his behavior during class time.

Academically, he is a B student. He hates homework, but I work with him after school to get his assignments done.

I'm wondering what accommodations I can request from the school regarding his behavior and how best to manage it in the classroom. He has gotten kicked out of class several times this year for being too much of a disturbance.

Since they are private, I'm not sure what I can request from them. Would appreciate any feedback. Thank you.

Fyi, we tried guanfacine for awhile, but it made him sleepy and he did not want to continue it because he felt it interfered with his sports. We have an upcoming appointment with the doctor.
