I remember reading a study that supported this in a psychology class a looong time ago. I remember talking about it with friends and we kind of agreed we were all the same level of good looking.

Of course. Common sociological behavior for all of recorded history.
There is also the behavior of "mids" or "duffs" to be accepted into a group to make the hotter ones of the friend group look even hotter.

I'm conventionally attractive and I am attracted to people who look smart, seem kind, and are funny. As an adult it's a non-issue on who is attracted to me but in college any time there was a group project it was always boys I didn't know who were asking to be in a group with me.

Yes. Of course. How is this even a question? People tend to couple up with people who are of similar attractiveness -- there is a ton of research out there on this.
