My DD got a 1090 or something like that on the PSAT. Lowest among her peers. We were worried too. But she managed to get a 1450 on the SAT with some help. Your DC can improve too.

We are in the same boat with 10th grade DD but slightly lower score.

Mine scored very low on the PSATs and had a ton of tutoring and test prep. She improved by a whopping 20 points. However, the regularly scheduled sessions were really helpful when she needed regular school class related help. And, it was shocking because mine was a straight A student her entire life, including through HS.

First of all, if it's out of line with usual testing and he's a bright kid, yes, it's shockingly low.

Second, given the above, of course he can do much better with prep. If I were you, I'd pay for individual tutoring. We paid for extensive tutoring and test prep with Prep Matters for our autistic kid with ADHD and low processing speed, and it was worth every penny. I assume there are other one-on-one prep companies out there. For kids who are easily distracted, personally, I wouldn't out them in group prep classes.

Perfect timing. Start SAT classes (or even Khan Academy) second semester of sophomore year. Then have them take the SATs as much as possible. Practice makes perfect! My kid started test prep second semester junior year and I truly think it was a year too late.

It seems like everyone is saving their scores this year were lower than expected. I think they are all over the place with the tests the last couple of years. Last year was too easy and I think this year was too hard.

We had our inattentive kid do test prep for PSAT and it worked really well. A lot of those test skills really just need to be learned and practiced in different ways and from different angles.

Test optional has distorted the reality of what most kids get on the SAT. It sounds like "everyone" is getting 1400+ because those are the only people who talk about their scores because in test optional era, those are the only kids who submit scores. It's not the reality of the range of scores.

My 11th grader was bummed by his score too. He scored out of line with all his previous standards testing, including past PSATs. He has dyslexia. Sometimes you have a slightly off day.

OP I looked on the College Board website and 950 is in the 61st %ile nationally of kids who took the PSAT this year.

Don't discount the ADHD. Yes your kid can learn to improve. It's why the test prep industry exists.

put this phrase in google

what percentile is 950 on 10th grade PSAT

It's 50th percentile and not shockingly low at all. The PSAT is also not graded out of 1600 which most people don't seem to realize. It's out of 1520.

Oh for heavens sake.

He's in the TENTH GRADE. He most likely has not even had a lot of the material in classes yet, particularly in the math section.

Please call down about this OP.

Just got our 10th grader's PSAT score back today. He's a good test taker, but has ADHD pretty bad. All his scores on other standardized tests through the years have been above average, so to see that he got a 950 on his PSAT's was pretty disappointing. We plan to put him in a class or hire a tutor for SAT prep, but did anyone have the experience of their kid scoring really low on the PSAT only to improve a lot on the SAT?
