Are you trying to save money for your kids for when AI takes all the jobs? that seems like a good reason to me.

It's inertia and fear. Fear of the unknown and fear of making a decision that is not reversible. Fear of what's next. Fear of so completely closing one chapter that probably has some things you'll miss and not moving toward something very specific.

I am in the same position so at least this is what it is for me.

My job is miserable some days, but fine most days. It is the only job I have ever known.
At 47, I simply went very part time with long vacations. Glad it is possible.
I do like my boss though.
If I were 50+, I'd definitely get out and go volunteer somewhere.

Is your job big projects, or separate daily tasks? If big projects, how do you manage the part time and vacations?

I have more money saved that I need to retire. I don't have expensive tastes.

My job is miserable and unimportant, but pays well. My bosses think I do good work, but I disagree.

But I won't quit my job. Why??

Fear Obligation and Guilt? FOG?

Strangely, that fits, but I wouldn't say that it's the result of my job's personality disorder manipulating me or being demanding.

You are a lazy thinker. No need to crowd-source this. You are the problem.

At work I am thinking about those things that I'd rather be doing.

Definitely not. Much more interested in non job things. Quite aware.

It is the safe choice, you've been trained your whole life to do this work.

Misery is your mindset. You’re making it miserable for yourself.

Do you want to feel needed?
