Special education teacher here. You need to write down exactly what social problems your son has and meet with the teacher to find out if she sees these same issues in class. Then those issues need to be related to his academic success. For example, if he has trouble taking turns when talking, he will not be successful when working with a partner on a math activity. Then you ask for an IEP meeting to add a goal related to the specific problem your son has to be added to his IEP. You can ask for his other teachers to be surveyed about behavior in their classes like PE, art, or music.
The guidance counselor can include him in things like lunch groups or social skills groups.
If he has a current IEP, you need to contact the case manager. If he does not have a current IEP, contact the principal, teacher, and guidance counselor in one email. Say that social-emotional services are necessary for your son to fully participate in school activities. Also, ask for any information they have about groups or services outside of school, which you would have to pay for.
