I've had all 5 of my wooden spoons and spatulas for anywhere from 10 to 25 years, and have only lost one. So I don't think an occasional run through the dishwasher will kill them immediately, as long as you keep them conditioned.
How does this look, any image of it you can share? what it looks like after lot of color is soaked up?
