My good, good friend from HS went there on the 90s. He is super smart but was not ready to be serious back then. It took him a long, long time to find his way. Now he is extremely successful.

My son goes to Loyola. It’s a pretty good mix of students but most come from Maryland, NJ, and Long Island. It’s always been that way even when I was a student there in the 90s. Beautiful campus which I believe is a registered arboretum. It’s in northern Baltimore City about a mile from the county line. It’s surrounded on three sides by neighborhoods like Cleveland Park, Wesley Heights, Woodley Park.

There is an honors program but I’d say most students were probably B students in HS. It’s Jesuit so pretty liberal as far as the Catholic faith. My son likes everything about it except that they don’t have a football team.

The reason why WSJ and rankings love the school is because they recruit heavily from NYC, NJ, and NYC suburbs. Therefore they have a disproportionately high number of alums working in NYC and therefore earning higher salaries than other MD regional schools. They do put a lot of focus on the business school and business majors.


I spoke with someone at the school about this and apparently WSJ heavily weights kids outcomes in terms of getting jobs and salary. Loyol has a very tight alumni network and alums take helping grads to find opportunities seriously. I have known a couple people who went there and they still have strong loyalty to the school (none of them are in business, they are in government or nonprofit). Great President. Practical, positive, very sharp.

Preppy, sporty. Has school spirit - no football but other D1 sports. It is a lovely school with a Core Curriculum and faculty that care. It is not hard to get into so the level of students isn't the highest. I know some incredibly bright kids there, though, who liked the Jesuit vibe and were very happy with the financial aid package. They are incredibly generous with merit aid. It is very focused on preparing kids professionally, getting them internships that lead to jobs. Wall Street Journal loves the school - it is very high on the list.

Also some more alternative types -- big into humanities and service. Nice mix of perspectives. Could do better w/ cultural/racial diversity. Pretty campus.
