About a quarter of our 6th graders dropped out. And I agree with the PP - what's the rush, everyone?

There are threads for discussing the program. This one is to discuss how it is going because people are curious. Would you please find one of the other 6th grade Algebra threads and join the discussion here so people don’t have to read through a ton of off topic posts.

Same. There is no reason to be in a rush. It's a rat race to nowhere.

I would fully expect to expunge and take Algebra I again next year as a 7th grader. Just use this experiment as a more advanced pre-Algebra class.

22:10 PP here. I agree 100%. I don’t know who is worse FCPS for making an announcement so close to the beginning of the school year, or the teachers who accepted to do the work, but are openly doing a bad job as if they are trying to prove that students cannot do it.

Do you feel like your kid is actually learning the curriculum? Bc while an A is nice, the curriculum is kind of important.

I don’t think my child is learning much at school. I think the curriculum, or at least the implementation at our school, is a joke. We are doing outside enrichment though, so DC will be fine.

Given the rush to implement this, our school was unable to procure an on-site teacher, so they went virtual instead. Not ideal for 6th graders

Due to the initial messaging that the grade would be permanent after first quarter, half of the kids dropped it. It is unfortunate that the guidance indicating the grade can be expunged after the school year came so late.

I applaud the existing kids trudging thru the mud, paving the way for next year. I think it will be successful, despite the rhetoric from some teachers, who were displeased with the quick and dirty implementation, trying to get the kids to drop it

I don't know where your messaging came from, but the expunge option was clear both from our school and from DCUM from the beginning.

Can't really blame them, but it was the school principal, working off of the limited information at the time. The message was: you can drop the class before end of 1st quarter without consequence. After 1st quarter, you will receive withdraw pass or withdraw fail, depending on what the students grade was when withdrawing. Scared many people off

Maybe six or seven (heh) weeks after the school year began, it was clarified that the option to expunge exists (and had always existed)

Report cards will come out soon. Our child was tracking to receive an A before the gradebook was taken down at the end of the quarter.

We are not a family that talks to other families about their grades, so I can only speak to our experience.

PP. This is at a 6-8 MS with an established Algebra teacher in a class with upperclassmen.
