You have to go to the zocalo. Xochimilco is a fun photo op, but I can see it being more fun if you're with some locals.
Definitely go the pyramids. Hire a driver.
Also realize that traffic is horrendous and it will take forever to get around the city. So stay close to the things you want to do in the city. It's normal for it to take 45 minutes to go a few miles. You think you're ready for this living in DC, but you are not, I promise you.

Do the mariachi bands still play at plaza garibadli? I loved that when I went years ago. I also thought the plaza mayor was worth visiting, and I send the archeological museum which is awesome.
I personally would also love a tour of murals.

Personally, I hate Xochimilco. It's a rip off and there are dead rats in the river.
Take your kids to the National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropología), get a guide/tour out to Teotihuacan, taco tours, and if you are able to get out of the city to Cholula or Tepoztlán it is def worth it.

On the other thread I recommended the Archeology Museum and hot air balloon ride over the pyramids. We went with college aged kids and everyone loved both activities.

Xochimilco! It’s so much fun. I’d suggest booking a tour boat through Viator or Airbnb Experiences.

There was a thread on this just a week ago with good ideas.
