Your question and explanation are unclear. Did the person go to Asia for vacation? That is not the same as asking to work 25 hours a week instead of 32 hours a week. And, if the person you know was granted a part-time schedule then maybe there is no room for a second person to drop hours. You have not explained the kind of job you do. However, when asking for a reduction in schedule it is best to do some homework first. Approach the issue with the supervisor by saying you are thinking about this and why (generally good reasons are I'm about to be a parent, job changes in the family are making it difficult to get the kids to school, an elderly parent needs more care, etc.) and see what the reaction is. It is also important to have alternate options. These might include coming in every day for less hours, not dropping hours but working virtually 1 day a week or a few hours each day. If you ask with no warning, no legitimate reason, and no options for how it could work then generally the answer is going to be a no.

We just had someone ask to go to Asia just like that and it got granted!

Dropping from full time to 80% is a big deal. If they didn't need a full timer, they wouldn't have hired you. Also, as a consideration for you, if they allowed that, you may not qualify for their health insurance program.

Are you asking to go from full time to part time? Or are you expecting all the full time pay and benefits with 20% less of your presence?

I work for a start up and have been there for quite some time now.
I asked if it’s alright if I don’t come in one day of the week and got turned down! The reason was because they need all staff available until they hire more.

Now I genuinely was expecting a yes, you see because this request had been granted with someone else before.
Oh well I’m not too sad about it but just a bit confused..
Because we have some younger people on our team that get time off pretty often I’d say. Even though they needed a full staff..

I am in my 40’s and maybe that has something to do with it? I need the time for a personal, private matter and maybe they think I’m being lazy?
