If you're applying for current 8th mid year, I'd do Fusion for the rest of the year and start applying now for 9th at your desired high schools.

We moved our kid midyear - I just emailed the admissions address at all the schools that I thought might be a fit. There were a few places I thought would for sure be full that were at least willing to look at her application. So I would reach out widely.

Don't expect to get any aid.

Depends how bad the current situation is. Most of a year in a new school that is supportive is better than staying in a bad situation. Sometimes a fresh start is worth the hassle. A K-8 is going to be much better helping with h.s. admissions than a K-12 if the K-12 ends up not being the right fit.

Just email. It’s pretty easy - admissions emails will be on the website. Reach out and specify grade and gender, and when you’re looking move (asap, Jan, etc). Keep it short - most schools won’t have openings and the ones that do can get details later. Just copy and paste and send the email to any school you might consider.

I did this during Covid and 11 of 12 schools responded within a day.

If it’s for 8th that will be tough. Just apply this year for 9th and focus on finding a good high school for all four years instead of an interim solution for now

I agree with the PP that you’re going to have to call around. Some of the schools that typically have some openings had record admissions this past year so unless someone has moved or left unexpectedly, there’s no telling if there’s spots.

You'll need to call around - a school that happens to have space in that particular grade may, but there's no way to know without just calling.
