Do you have to report that you repeated a class like for college apps and if so, does it matter?

"The highest of the grades earned shall be entered on the student’s
transcript by the principal/designee and shall be used to compute
weighted and unweighted grade point averages."

DC is retaking a language class that he already took in middle school. If the grade was higher in middle school, is that the grade that shows up on his transcript? Originally the school told me that it was the current class that would count. They then called.back to say his higher grade would be the one to show up on his transcript. I'm just double checking since they seem confused.
