Our AART told us both 1st and 2nd grade teachers have input (among others) and if I recall correctly it says this in the packet the school submits that you can request after it goes to the central committee. Presumably the 2nd grade teacher would hold more sway but who knows. Opaque and seemingly inconsistent process.

I’ve heard such mixed things. My kids school says that the HOPE score comes from current teacher and not first grade. I have no idea…

Thanks. It was only the situation last year due to the teacher and things done by the teacher. Never had issues in KG and again in grade 2, straight 4s this year, happy and thriving with a nice normal teacher and environment and teacher saying nothing but great things . Last year was 2s and 3s and progress reports saying wasn’t focusing etc. This was due to the anxiety. The school didn’t change her class because as I mentioned administration was being changed.

You need to be careful how you frame it. If the child is experiencing anxiety due to an unmet need for similar peers, or other reason related to being in general education, this is a strong argument they need AAP to thrive. If it is unrelated, you should still explain the impact on grades, but you need to be sure you also explain how you have already addressed the issue. Otherwise, the committee might be worried there is an untreated/unmitigated anxiety issue and adding a more advanced curriculum on top of that could be hard on the child. That's my 2 cents as a parent of an anxious kid who is so much happier and healthier in AAP with similar peers who "get" their quirks.

I’m hoping you all can give me some advice. My child is in grade 2. Very good test scores etc and thriving this school year. Last year, however, due to a very bad classroom experience and dynamic with the teacher, my child experienced severe anxiety and was vomiting before school for months. Was terrified of going to school and we tried to involve school’s administration but because the leadership was in flux, nothing was done and was just placed with the guidance counselor. Counselor also stated that the anxiety was obvious due to classroom. Lot more to all of this, but basically grades and confidence were really affected. However NNAT was still very strong. My question is, is this worth mentioning in the application since such distinction this year from last? Definitely capable of more advanced work but last years report card doesn’t say that. There are very unique circumstances behind it but I don’t want it to look like making excuses even though truth. Thoughts?
